Fifth Annual Isaac Perez Race to Read

Saturday, June 28 2008 @ 10:25 AM EDT

Las Vegas

The Isaac Perez Race to Read brought the students of Ruth Fyfe to their feet again this year as they cheered with enthusiasm as the winners of the competition were announced.

For the fifth year in a row, students at Fyfe engaged in an intense six weeks of reading, devouring hundreds of thousands of pages of text among them. In the end 30 prizes were awarded, five in each grade level, to students who read for the greatest number of minutes. The classes in each grade level who turned in the greatest percentage of reading logs were awarded an ice cream party.

Las Vegas BookPALS would like to thank those who donated prizes: Laser Quest, Kids Quest, Strip Illusionist Lance Burton, and Chili’s Restaurant on Decatur and the 215. A special thanks goes out to former BookPALS coordinator Finley Bolton for soliciting gift-card donations in lieu of birthday presents this year. We utilized those as prizes in the Isaac Perez Race to Read this year.

The program honors Isaac Perez, a janitor who was killed at the school in May of 2002. Isaac was a passionate member of the school's staff -- who volunteered his time at the school in the Northwest Region. A special thanks to Isaac's grandma, Miriam Quintana, and school librarian, Tammie Brooks, for making the fifth annual Race to Read a reality.
