Patti Shomion Named Library Volunteer of the Year

Thursday, May 21 2009 @ 06:40 PM EDT

Minnesota

Congratulations to BookPALS reader Patti Shomion -- she was honored as the St. Paul Public Library Volunteer of the Year this spring. Patti volunteers more than 40 hours per month to help prepare puppets and props, rehearse, and perform in many puppet shows as a member of the Loki Players. Patti reads at Riverview School in West St. Paul every week. As a special treat, she invited some classes to see her puppetry performance of "The Three Little Pigs" at the Central Library in downtown St. Paul.

It was a serendipitous coincidence when Patti Shomion arranged to meet coordinator Delta Giordano for a BookPALS orientation at the downtown St. Paul library last year. The adjacent cafe where they were going to meet was closed, so they went into the children's department of the library. A librarian stopped by to chat and asked if anyone in the group did puppetry, and Patti raised her hand! She started volunteering with the library's puppet troupe soon after and was just honored as Volunteer of the Year.
