San Francisco

The San Francisco BookPALS community was saddened to hear about the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Robert Kennedy. Many of us had the opportunity to meet and work with Robert over the years, as he was one of the original BookPALS who helped launch the program under the leadership of Tracy Heffernan.

He started reading at John Gill Elementary in Redwood City (1988) and when he and his wife, Robyn moved to Sacramento, he spent many years reading at Empire Oaks, FC Joyce and Woodlake Elementary Schools in Folsom. He never passed up a chance to read and sometimes spent an entire day in the Empire Oaks School Library reading to classes.

In every classroom he read, he brought his life stories to enhance the book he was getting Jackie Robinson’s autograph.

“Growing up in Brooklyn during the days of three major league teams in New York, I happened to be at Ebbets Field on the day in April 1947 when Jackie Robinson first appeared in a Brooklyn Dodgers uniform in an exhibition game against my beloved Yankees. In those days I collected baseball players autographs (which I got in person with the luxury of three teams in town) and these included Robinson's among many others.”

We are honored to have had Robert in our lives and part of San Francisco BookPALS for over 12 years. His passion for reading to children and sharing stories will continue to inspire us.

Robert has requested in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to SAG Foundation BookPALS.
