Our Community Responds to the Minneapolis Bridge Collapse

Wednesday, August 08 2007 @ 11:53 AM EDT

Minnesota

It was a week ago today, just after 6:00pm on Wednesday, August 1, that a section of Interstate 35W fell into the Mississippi River. It was a shock to our community here and has reverberated throughout the country. Many of us drove over that bridge on a regular basis, so the survivors and those who lost loved ones have been in our thoughts daily. We are grateful to the first-responders and citizens who risked their own lives helping others to safety.
One of the most startling images was the yellow school bus stranded on a section of the bridge. Amazingly, all of the children were rescued and reunited with their families that night thanks to the staff and others who responded so heroically. A fund has been set up by Pillsbury United Communities to assist the children and their families with medical and other expenses. Go to the PUC website for more info. There is also a "Safe and Well" registry and Family Assistance Center location info on the website for the Twin Cities chapter of the Red Cross.

American Girl Readings

Tuesday, July 03 2007 @ 02:11 PM EDT

Los Angeles

On June 29, 2007 the Screen Actors Guild Foundation celebrated volunteerism during the Spirit of Service Day at the American Girl Place at The Grove. The event was held to recognize the caring attitude of girls who devote their time to helping others.

To continue championing children’s literacy, the SAG Foundation arranged for young actresses to come to the store to do book readings every hour from the newest American Girl books. Girls were inspired by the animated storytelling from actresses Courtney Taylor Burness, Melissa Feuchtinger, Sammi and Danielle Hanratty and Lauren Storm.
