On Saturday, February 12, 2005, eight BookPALS joined with the staff, students and families of Palomino II Elementary School to help celebrate "un dia de lectura" a day of reading at the school's second annual Reading Festival.

Starbucks' book drive yielded over 3,000 books that were donated to BookPALS' classrooms, teachers, churches, shelters and Saint Vincent de Paul. Thank you to Washington School District Distribution Center for allowing us to store and sort books at their warehouse. Children went home with books to read for the summer and they were delighted!

BookPAL Steven Fried reads to 12 classes in the library at Palomino II School. Steve didn't want "his" kids to go without books for the holidays. Thanks to a generous donation to BookPALS from the Arizona PGA golfers, teachers were able to select the exact books they wanted in their book basket classroom library. Trader Joe's graciously donated the baskets. During Ellen Nathan's 2005 annual visit to Arizona for the BookPALS workshop, BookPALS delivered all the baskets to the teachers and students. The delighted students responded with touching thank you notes.

In February, 2004, 9th graders from Metro Tech High School in Phoenix and 6th graders from Madison Park Elementary School in Phoenix, completed their hard bound autobiographies. As part of the BookPALS "We the Children" program funded by a grant from the Starbucks Foundation, each child wrote and illustrated his/her own story after interviewing family members. High school students learned new computer skills by scanning and inserting photos. Sixth graders honed their word processing skills. Not only did the students learn the value of books, they learned the importance of their own cultures, histories, and families.

Read Across America 2004 and 2005, celebrated Dr. Seuss' 100th and 101st birthday. BookPALS readers read in their schools and participated in special events around the state. BookPAL Gene Ganssle, dressed as the Cat in the Hat and helped the Phoenix Suns Read to Achieve program by reading to hundreds of enthusiastic children at the Suns Arena.
