Many thanks to First Book National Book Bank and Random House Children's Books for their generous donation to Minnesota BookPALS. The shipment wasn't expected until mid-summer, but the cartons were delivered to Delta's house on June 8th. Two MN BookPALS offered to hand books out to their students on June 12th, the last day of school in St. Paul. Nearly 300 children were able to go home with a brand new book for the summer!

Minnesota BookPALS was pleased to participate in the 13th Annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers & Illustrators Awards Celebration. The event was hosted by Twin Cities Public Television (TPT) at their studios in St. Paul on May 8, 2007. The winning stories were read by Bookpal extraordinaire Adena Brumer (pictured below reading "Little Sneetchel Saves the Village" by Sophie Houghton, Kindergarten).
The awards were presented by Patty McDonald, MN StoryLine Coordinator, and Marnie Johnson, Co-Manager of The Red Balloon Bookshop. The special guest was children's author & illustrator David LaRochelle, who shared stories from his own creative childhood. After the awards presentation, Mr. LaRochelle took time to sign books for his young fans.

We're very sad to report that our chapter lost one of our long-time readers on March 30, 2007. Margaret Clare Altman was one of the original volunteers when we started the program here in 1998. She lived on a farm in Grasston, in a lovely rural area outside of the Twin Cities metro. Margaret Clare read at Braham Elementary School for several years, even continuing after breast cancer surgery in 2006. On behalf of your fellow Bookpals, teachers and students, you will be missed!

(Thanks to the Altman family for sending this photo of Margaret Clare on her 70th birthday)

Minnesota Coordinator Delta Giordano celebrates RAA with first-graders at Falcon Heights
Our READ ACROSS AMERICA activities were covered with a blanket of snow on March 1 & 2! Some of our readings were scheduled earlier or postponed until the following week, but many of our intrepid BookPALS trudged through the snow on Thursday to their schools -- merit badges for all of you! Those of us who had planned to read on the big day -- March 2, Dr. Seuss's birthday -- were left out in the cold since most schools were closed. The Minnesota kids who were house-bound during the storm probably longed for a visit from The Cat in the Hat!

As the new coordinator for Minnesota BookPALS, I'm pleased to announce a couple of family-friendly events that I hope you'll be able to attend later this summer and early fall: We'll be partnering with Education Minnesota again at the State Fair on August 30 -- BookPALS will be reading between 9am - 4pm in the Education Building. Take a break from the heat and come by to hear some great children's stories!

Hello To All Our Wonderful BookPALS and Friends! As of today, June 15th, I will no longer serve as the Coordinator for Minnesota BookPALS, having accepted a position with a business media consultancy. Dry work, I'm sure, compared to the wonderful folk I've had the privilege to work with these past years.
