Andre Stark is a professional actor, producer, and director. He is also an important member of Boston BookPALS, Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools. As a BookPAL, Andre visited a second grade student named Kevin at his school in Cambridge every other week this fall to read aloud. For weeks, the two escaped through stories and laughed together about the antics of Curious George and the many whimsical characters created by author Bill Peet.

Eugene Bolande brings Poetry to the Classroom

Saturday, April 02 2005 @ 09:06 PM EST

BookPAL Eugene Bolande has continued to visit classrooms throughout Cambridge, Dorchester and Boston, spreading his enthusiasm for poetry.

He has created inspiring programs for Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, African American month, Martin Luther King’s Birthday and Poetry month. Often several BookPALS join Eugene on his classroom visits, reciting poems from Dr Seuss to Shakespeare’s King Henry the Eighth pre-battle speech to the troupes, complete with crown!. The teacher and kids follow with their own favorite poems. Eugene always ends each class time with a rousing rendition of an appropriate Poem for the month. It is great fun for all involved.

Kieren Van den Blink

"I've been reading in Room#6, Estherly Coltons' first grade class at Selma Elementary School in Hollywood for two and a half years now. In fact, one of the first commitments I made when I landed in Los Angeles was volunteering for Bookpals. I had heard about it while living in New York City. I started reading in Estherly's summer class, composed of mainly Russian students. Estherly has a bookshelf full of books, mostly books about animals and loving them and also about vegetarianism. The students were endearing.

Reed Kalisher on Read Across America Day

Wednesday, April 21 2004 @ 02:57 PM EDT

"After reading to the entire school over the closed circuit TV, I read to three first grade classes. We have a WONDERFUL friendship, complete with respect for me and fellow students who want to listen. I can't begin to tell you how wonderful it feels to pass classes of fourth graders who remind me of our friendships past by calling out my name, giving high fives, some hugs and lots of books shown to me with the chants of "Look what I am reading!" Reading for BookPALS is like having a HUGE family.

BIG SMILES,
Reed Kalisher

An Update from Ed Johnson

Wednesday, April 21 2004 @ 02:47 PM EDT

"Just to give you an update on my BookPALS adventures:

"First, it's a wonderful experience. I am reading to second grade kids (with about 8 different ethnicities) who I love! The teacher (Amy Larsen) thinks I'm great with the kids. They hug me each time I leave (except for the teacher : ) ). It's really great!

"I go every Thursday and read for 30 minutes, and the kids look forward to my coming. I read mostly from books that I had read to my now 11 year old. We have a goodly library. I bought a few books also. I leave the books that I read with the teacher to lend to the kids.
