Welcome to San Francisco BookPALS!
San Francisco Welcome to San Francisco BookPALS. It has been an exciting and rewarding year for BookPALS reading in classrooms, shelters and for special events around the Bay Area, including Sacramento and San Jose. A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone for sharing their time and talents.

We were also very fortunate this year to have the support of Variety Children's Charity, First Book and the Children's Book Project. Their generosity helped us get books into the hands of children who do not own books and assist schools in upgrading their in-class libraries.

"After receiving Judy Blume chapter books from Gigi Mamet (our BookPAL), my kids carried their new books with them everywhere. They even asked for silent reading time, which usually makes them groan." Ms. Murphy, Dixie Elementary - San Rafael.

If you can read once a week, once a month or occasionally...there is a place for you to share your talents and reach an attentive audience. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Remembering BookPAL Robert Kennedy 1935-2011

Friday, July 29 2011 @ 03:04 PM EDT

San Francisco

The San Francisco BookPALS community was saddened to hear about the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Robert Kennedy. Many of us had the opportunity to meet and work with Robert over the years, as he was one of the original BookPALS who helped launch the program under the leadership of Tracy Heffernan.

He started reading at John Gill Elementary in Redwood City (1988) and when he and his wife, Robyn moved to Sacramento, he spent many years reading at Empire Oaks, FC Joyce and Woodlake Elementary Schools in Folsom. He never passed up a chance to read and sometimes spent an entire day in the Empire Oaks School Library reading to classes.

Terry Brown reads to a little girl waiting to see a relative at Santa Rita Prison in Dublin, CA. "The ironic thing about this picture is that the cute little girl with me spoke Spanish and understood very little of what I read. We just enjoyed the story and the company."

Dan St. Paul reads to a group of attentive children. BookPALS recently partnered with the "Start With A Story" Project, an offshoot of the adult literacy efforts within the Alameda County jail system. One Saturday a month, BookPALS volunteer to read and give out FREE books to children waiting to see relatives.

Read Across America in Sacramento

Friday, June 27 2008 @ 04:33 PM EDT

San Francisco

Robert Kennedy read to eight classes @Empire Oaks Grammar School in Folsom on RAA Day. Two 5th grades, "Oh the Places You'll Go!," a 4th Grade, "Oh the Places You'll Go!," one 3rd Grade and two 2nd Grades, "Hooray for Diffendooffer Day" and finally, two 1st Grades, "Horton Hears A Who!" and "To Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street." Great response (particularly for "Hooray...", which most kids and some teachers and librarians don't seem to know). Also, very appreciative of the bookmarks from BookPALS.

Project Read

San Francisco

Project Read, an adult literacy program sponsored by the San Francisco Library, invited BookPALS to present five brief scenes from “Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller at the Wednesday Night Readers Book Club Program. Afterwards the performers participated in a discussion of the play with the learners and tutors present, who agreed that seeing the performance made a huge difference in their enjoyment and understanding of the play. One man said, “Now I want to go out and see a play.”

Four members of The Color Purple cast visited with 17 young women serving their time in the San Francisco Juvenile Justice System on November 26. Bridget Bentley, Jenna Jackson, Michelle Williams and Jeannette Bayardelle spent two hours talking with the girls and visiting their living unit. These four women were not only generous with their time, but extremely open and honest about their lives and what it took for them to follow their passion. The message was clear - if you have a dream, follow it. No one is stopping you, but you.
