Plantzilla
Written by Jerdine Nolen, illustrated by David Catrow
Recommended Ages: 6 7 8
This story consists of written correspondence between Mortimer (3rd Grade student), his parents, and Mr. Lester (Science teacher). The topic of so much discussion involves the care and welfare of Plantzilla (which Mortimer has brought home for the summer). Mortimer initially writes about how pleased he is to have Plantzilla home with him...However, his mother expresses concern over Plantzilla's rapid growth, and his seemingly insatiable desire for meat! Mortimer soon finds himself STRESSED by the whole situation...In the end, the family grows to love Plantzilla. (Plantzilla writes a letter expressing happines with his newfound surroundings.) Plant care aside, children can learn to appreciate the responsibility involved in caring for another living thing.
