In February, 2004, 9th graders from Metro Tech High School in Phoenix and 6th graders from Madison Park Elementary School in Phoenix, completed their hard bound autobiographies. As part of the BookPALS "We the Children" program funded by a grant from the Starbucks Foundation, each child wrote and illustrated his/her own story after interviewing family members. High school students learned new computer skills by scanning and inserting photos. Sixth graders honed their word processing skills. Not only did the students learn the value of books, they learned the importance of their own cultures, histories, and families.

A big thank you to BookPALS Toni Jourdan, Gene Ganssle, Sandra Russell, Bill Case, Dave Hopson and Sapphire King for working with the students during this exciting project.
We all celebrated the students' accomplishments at a "Meet the Authors" party held at Starbucks where parents, teachers, administrators, BookPALS volunteers, Starbucks partners and managers gathered to see the children receive their books and read aloud from them to an overflowing, appreciative audience. Starbucks provided the lovely venue at their 24th St. and Camelback store along with coffee and sweets.
This 2004-2005 school year, another "We the Children" program is being launched with Ms. Erica Hazen's 6th grade class at Palomino II School. We look forward to another set of published authors this spring.
