BookPALS SF partners with Louisiana school

BookPALS San Francisco is partnering with a school in Louisiana devastated by both Katrina and Rita. Despite all adversity, Pointe-Aux-Cheres Elementary school has reopened after its extended community gathered together, rolled up its collective sleeves and cleaned and cleared the flooded school.

BookPAL Carla Hatley spearheaded the effort, communicating with Principal Dawn LaFont any way they could. Bay Area schools (including Rooftop Elementary and Bessie Carmichael in San Francisco, Oxford Elementary in Berkeley, among others) each adopted a classroom so each child in each grade at P-A-C received a letter or a drawing, and teachers received packets of prizes to distribute as motivators.

Books are being sent for classroom libraries, and Alison Owens' class at Oxford Elementary is creating a "caring quilt".

Kids reaching out to kids, to keep the learning happening! Bravo all!

BookPALS "KidPAL" organizer Carla Hatley packs up books, letters, student art and other goodies to send to our adopted Katrina Kids School, Pointe-Aux-Cheres, in Louisiana.
