“Reading is the Key to Education; Education is the Door to the World”

This year BookPALS went into four different schools to put on an end of year performance and award ceremony to congratulate the children for reading. The goal of this program is to motivate the children to read. Every year the children look forward to this special time, where their hard work pays off and they are recognized. Our top reader this year read 200 books during the school year!

Margaret Flanagan, DJ Fogel, Barbara Mundy, Mary Rausch, Eric Saiet, Stephanie Schwartz, Nancy Sirianni and Elizabeth Pizzuti are all pictured. The assemblies would not have happened this year without this talented group of volunteer BookPALS.

Our Reading Club assembly included two short skits intermixed with two songs. Nancy Sirianni wrote and sang her song “Read This, the BookPALS song”. Eric Saiet wrote a very funny ‘Super Hero’ skit and a reading rap to the tune of “Lets get it Started”. Both performances got the children excited and energized for the final part of the show in which students were given T-shirts and books for reaching their reading goals. The students were thrilled to receive a “Star reader” T-shirt when they read 30 or more books. If they read more than 35 books, they also had their picture taken. Lastly, the top reader of every class received a hard cover book of their choice donated by Harcourt Children’s Publishing.

The children who read 35 or more books received a “Star Reader” shirt and their picture was taken. Later, the pictures were created into a poster hung in the school for all to see!

J.J Singleton (pictured second row far left), who currently plays young Simba on Broadway in the Lion King, performed in our last Reading Club Assembly at PS 52 in Brooklyn.

PS 128 in Manhattan prepared raps and dance routines for the Book PALS. We loved this as we were able to see all of the amazing talent at this school.

We were lucky to have a wonderful intern during the month of June, Kate Brereton, who helped with all of the end of year events and activities. She said, “This was my first assembly and I really had no idea what to expect. I was in awe by how special the assemblies truly are, between the actor’s enthusiasm and the children’s enchantment it was just a wonderful experience.”
