Alice and Richard Weiner have been reading at a school in Long Island this past year! Here is what they have to tell us about it!

Pictured are Richard and Alice Weiner reading to the students at the Ulysses S. Byas
Elementary School in Long Island.
We have been reading to the children of Roosevelt, Long Island since last fall. We go
every Thursday. Last year we read to 3 second grade classes for half an hour
each. This year, the entire school population of the Ulysses S. Byas
Elementary School in Long Island moved to another building. So, we have been reading to one third
grade class and one 2nd grade class.Lately, I have been doing it by myself,
since my husband started working part time.
We were motivated to become BookPALS because we were looking to do something
we would enjoy that would benefit others. We love kids, and we love acting, so this was perfect. It has been a very rewarding experience. We have been ucky enough to work with a master teacher, Mrs. Warfield and we have become friends. Her class is a delight to work with, and they love us! They make us
holiday cards, write us letters, and last year the 3 classes made us a party on our last day. They even gave us presents and put on a show for us!
Some of the favorite books are by Judith Viorst, Dr. Seuss, Poems by Jack
Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein. There are far too many to list.
One event that stands out happened last year. We were reading from a book
called "Love Your Neighbor" by Arthur Dobrin. We know Arthur personally, and
we were able to get him to come with us to read to the children from his book. The kids and teachers were thrilled, and it was a sensational experience for us all. We didn't have to do anything special to become BookPals. Just have a
desire and show up!
