INDIANA UNIVERSITY ADOPTS
CATHEDRAL CITY 5TH GRADE CLASS
(The following is from PS Unified District Quarterly Supplement, of summer 2008, distributed in The Desert Sun Newsaper)
April 8, 2008, was a very special day at Cathedral City Elementary School.
"Martha McDevitt's 5th grade class at Cathedral City Elementary was "adopted" by Indiana University thanks to the efforts of local radio talk show host, Anita Rufus, who reads to McDivitt's class as part of the Screen Actors Guild Foundation BookPALS program. Rufus introduced her friend Jack Kimberling, a retired Los Angeles lawyer, political author, and active alumnus of IU and its law school, to the "No Excuses University" program, and Kimberling took the idea to IU which readily agreed to sponsor the class.
At a recent "adoption" ceremony, Kimberling presented each student in McDevitt's class with a university DVD, shirt and information kit. Board of Education Clerk, Gary Jeandron, who attended the adoption ceremony, encouraged the students to establish and maintain good study skills in order to be successful in college.
Anita Rufus also stated the following in an earlier press release for this event, "Reading to these amazing students is the high point of my week. If this encourages them to see their future including college, then we have made a huge difference in their lives."

CCE Class adopted by Indiana University to participate in "No Excuses University" program.
BookPAL, Anita Rufus, locates her hometown on US map for students in 2nd grade classroom.
