IN THEIR WORDS - A BOOKPALS' POEM

Monday, August 11 2008 @ 12:08 AM EDT

BookPAL, Jack Egan, who reads at Mountain Vista Elementary School in Indio was moved to write the following poem for his third grade students. On his last visit before summer break, he gave the poem to each student.

"The "BookPALS" asked me to read
And I said I would indeed
They asked, "Can you handle 3rd grade?"
And I said I would without getting paid

I was surprised when I met all you guys
Because you helped to open my eyes
I discovered how smart and caring you are
And I know you all will go far

So we read the oath each time
To remind us of a promise in rhyme
We will read as much as we can
This summer as part of our plan

I thank you and your teacher, so kind
That you allowed me to enter your mind
Stay happy and be good to all whom you meet
If you do this, your life will be warm and complete

Jack Egan resides in Indio, California
