Congratulations to Ms. Maria Howell, honored as Atlanta BookPAL of the Month for January 2009!

Maria Howell, Atlanta BookPAL Since 2005

Ms. Howell has been reading at T.H. Slater Elementary School in Atlanta, Georgia this year. She currently reads in Ms. Nolan and Ms. Graham's second-grade classrooms.

Akisha Graham says, "Maria Howell has been an inspiring and motivating reader to my second-grade class. She engages all of the students as they welcome her every visit. They are always eager to hear her new books and even began bringing in their favorite books for her to read. We welcome her anytime!"

As an actress, Ms. Howell's film credits include: "Mississippi Damned," "The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Scandal of 1920," "K-Ville," "Daddy's Little Girls," "Barbed Wire," "American Gothic," "Scattered Dreams," "Linda," and "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles," among others.

As a singer, Maria's signature film performance as the choir soloist in the movie "The Color Purple" was quoted by one critic as being, "One of the film's most stirring moments!" Her rendition of "God Is Trying to Tell You Something" was memorable for all who saw it, but the offerings of the all-grown-up Maria are truly unforgettable, eliciting more stirring moments, one after another.

Maria is currently singing at Sambuca in Atlanta on Monday evenings with Bill Wilson.

Please join me in congratulating Ms. Maria Howell for her outstanding performance as an Atlanta BookPAL!
