Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

San Francisco BookPALS gathered today for their 15th celebration of Read Across America Day, at the very school where BookPALS began in San Francisco 15 years ago: Rooftop School. SF BookPALS Mary Dilts, Duncan Fife, Martin Ganapolos, William Hall, Roger Oyama, and Martha Stookey were joined by local author Ashley Wolff to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday and read his story Gerald McBoing Boing to over 350 kids. The kids enjoyed joining in at the end, practicing some “Boings!” and other sound effects along with SF BookPALS!

Before and after this morning’s reading, BookPALS spent time in different classrooms, sharing their favorite Dr. Seuss stories. The 4th graders in Mr. Rogers’s class were treated to a special story written by Duncan Fife’s mother, Dale Fife, called The Empty Lot. Kids were transfixed as they listened to the story about a man who discovers “there’s no such thing as an empty lot,” and, in the words of one boy, learns to “care for every living thing.”

Thank you to librarian Tamra Marshall, our “hostess with the mostest,” SF BookPALS for putting together a superb performance for the kids, and, of course, for bringing the joy of reading to children all over the Bay Area. BookPALS know better than anyone that reading with a caring adult is not something that should only be celebrated once a year, but EVERY DAY!
